When Michael Jacks was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease three years ago he was forced to sell his catering business. Within a year, the forty five year old internationally trained chef could no longer cook. Still in love with food, Michael took up a pen in place of his wooden spoon and began to write a cookbook… “Cooking is all about giving,” says author Michael Jacks. “You give of yourself when you cook. As a chef I liked nothing better than watching people eat and enjoy my food. Two years ago I was forced to stop giving when Motor Neurone Disease caused my arms to grow weak. I still felt the need to give, and I still thought about food constantly, so I began to write down all the recipes I enjoyed preparing at Marchetti’s Latin, Renoir and Michael Jacks Catering.” My Life, My food contains more than just recipes. The pages of this full colour gloss 184 page cookbook are peppered with Michael’s tricks of the trade, mementos of his culinary travels, snippets of his life, photos of the family he’ll soon leave behind, and Michael’s honest and inspiring observations on living with a terminal illness. Contributing to the welfare of others was a very big driver for this project as well as the need to leave something tangible to his three young children. Consequently, all sale proceeds will be donated to Access Inc. to aid them in their efforts to raise money for children with disabilities. About the author Michael Jacks was born in 1959 In Brisbane and has worked as head chef in one of Melbourne’s most revered restaurants, Marchetti’s Latin, as as well as a number of top restaurants in London, Zurich and Sydney.
